How Having Latvian Passport Benefits Your Business

How Having Latvian Passport Benefits Your Business

You’re an ambitious entrepreneur with your sights set on international business. You’re also thinking it might be possible for you to get Latvian citizenship. But do you know yet how these two variables intersect?

Though it might not be the first thing that comes to mind when restoring Latvian citizenship, business advantages are a tangible benefit here.

If you’re a business-minded person, you probably tend to always create a Plan B (or C, D, E…) just in case things go awry and you need to act fast to save the day. It’s also a known fact that having clear, solid options before you do need them is the best course of action.

But let’s start at the beginning.

Who can restore Latvian citizenship

Latvian citizenship restoration is guided by one simple rule. To be eligible, you have to be a descendant of a Latvian citizen who left the country in the period of occupation (circa 1940-1990)— and you need to be able to prove it with documents.

Restoring citizenship has many personal benefits, including relocation rights to any country in the EU (as Latvia is a member state) as well as accessible healthcare and education.

But that’s not everything— getting your Latvian citizenship restored has many tangible advantages that can help you expand your existing business or set in motion your long-held plans for a new and exciting project.

7 Benefits of having a Latvian passport for your business

Let’s delve into the nitty-gritty: how exactly does restoring Latvian citizenship benefit your international business prospects? and Education Benefits of Latvian Dual Citizenship

1. Easy travel and relocation

The Latvian economy is stable and growing, the average income is high, and the country comes in 39th in the Human Development Index— quite the feat. But because Latvia is a member state of the European Union, you aren’t confined to keep the business within its borders. Instead, you can take your project to any state of the EU (of course, you’ll have to check each country’s specific guidelines first) and enjoy easy movement across European borders.

And there’s more— holding a Latvian passport means you can access over 150 countries visa-free or with a simple visa-on-arrival. Latvia’s passport is ranked 12th in the world in 2020. This saves money, time, and gives your business the freedom it needs to thrive.

2. Better business image

As a business person, the benefits of being an EU citizen extend to projecting a more cosmopolitan, professional image. Unfortunately, bias does exist in the business world. If you are eligible for Latvian citizenship, you have the chance to even out the playing field and access better opportunities in certain situations.

3. Potential more lenient business taxation

If your home country is notorious for taxing businesses big time, setting up your company might not seem very attractive. Especially if you aspire to run your business internationally.

Conversely, some countries in Europe are known for establishing a lower-taxation environment that works to stimulate investment and development. Hungary, for example, has a 9% corporate tax policy. Ireland and Lithuania – 12.5% and 15% respectively. In the Netherlands, an innovation policy means that if a self-developed patent generates at least 30% of the profits, you’re taxed at a rate of 7%.

Setting up base in one of these countries gives you a better financial outcome while still operating internationally. Do the math— it’ll come out in your favor.

4. Potential better personal taxes

Similarly, some European countries are considered personal tax havens. Take Andorra: with a 10% tax on residents and companies and no tax on transfers or investment income, relocation to this microstate can do wonders for your finances. Even though Andorra is not a member of the EU, Latvian passport holder can live there as any EU citizen.

5. Easier to open an EU company

With Latvian citizenship, you’ll find it is a lot easier to open a company in the EU than it would be for someone who is not a citizen. If you don’t hold an EU passport, starting your business in the region includes tedious visa processes, lots of red tape, and often prohibitive capital requirements. But if you are a Latvian citizen, you’re part of the EU. You have the right to start your business like any other citizen, no questions asked.

6. Financial safety

European banks are safe: opening an account for yourself or your company is always a good move. Keeping your savings (or part of your savings— diversification!) in an EU or EFTA bank can improve your long-term stability.

But for non-residents, there are complications. AML (anti-money-laundering) regulations implemented throughout the EU impose stricter conditions on what you can do— and how much paperwork you’re required to fill. For Latvian passport holders, these regulations are a lot more lenient and you can easily open an account.

7. The best plan B

You never know when you’ll be forced to take an unforeseen path. Anything from natural catastrophe to a pandemic or political struggles can bring down your country’s economic potential. Venezuela and South Africa are prime examples of this.

The problem — when things go wrong, everyone starts looking for options at the same time. Many people want to relocate when trouble has already started, but by then it’s too late and all viable routes are flooded.

Restoring Latvian citizenship before you need to emigrate is the wisest way to ensure a solid Plan B for yourself and your business and what are the Education Benefits of Latvian Dual Citizenship

Latvian citizenship: Will Your Spouse Get Citizenship or Residence?

Latvian citizenship: Will Your Spouse Get Citizenship or Residence?

Thinking of taking the plunge, finally getting your Latvian citizenship, and starting a new chapter of your life together with a loved one?

Or perhaps, you’re wondering if restoring your Latvian citizenship is worth it— after all, you’re already married and any big life decision affects your partner too.

Whatever your situation is, restoring citizenship is always a good idea. Not only does it give you a sense of connection to your roots, but also very tangible benefits for your future, whether you move to Europe or not.

If you’re married (or if you plan to be married), these benefits can look particularly attractive. After all, Latvia is a thriving place to live and to start a family. And what’s more romantic than a big, life-changing adventure with your significant other?

The big question: if you restore Latvian citizenship, will your spouse get it too? Or will they be able to get a residence permit?

When you get Latvian citizenship, does your spouse get it too?

Restoring Latvian dual citizenship by descent involves filling forms, researching documents, and presenting your case to the Latvian authorities (helping you through this process is what we do). All to prove you have an ancestor who was a Latvian citizen and left the country during the period of occupation (circa 1940-1990).

This means that your spouse won’t get citizenship when you do. It’s not passed on automatically (unlike what happens with any future children you have). The same goes if you’re not married when you acquire Latvian citizenship.

Are your big plans lost, then? Not at all! Keep reading to find out what you can do!

Even though the spouse of a Latvian citizen can’t become a citizen (unless they, too, can restore it by descent), other options allow you to start your new life together.

Namely, acquiring a residence permit in any given country in the EU— which is a much simpler process for the spouse of an EU national than for anyone else.

Applying for (and being granted) residence means that, though you’re not a citizen, you can live in the country for longer than 3 months. You’re also eligible for a work permit and can relocate with your Latvian spouse to any country within the EU.

Note: the immigration requirements and rules to acquire residence as a non-EU spouse vary from country to country. If you’re planning on relocating to a different state within the EU, you should check their specific laws.

However, there are general benefits you receive as the Non-EU spouse of an EU citizen:

● Right of family reunion— you have the right to join your Latvian citizen spouse and live together in the EU.

● This is more important than other criteria— you don’t need to prove your work experience, education, age, or criminal record. The right to family reunion is usually reason enough to be granted residence.

● As the spouse of someone with Latvian citizenship, you receive the right to work and study, as well as relocate to any country of the EU with your partner (with minimal paperwork involved).

● Eventually, you have the possibility of permanent residence and even citizenship. In Spain, Ireland, or Sweden, permanent residence comes after 5 years of uninterrupted legal residence. In Norway, three years’ the rule (plus other requirements). You should check the rules for your chosen relocation country.

What about living in the EU as a non-spouse?

For anyone who is not a spouse or partner of an EU national, who is not an EU national, and who wants to travel to the EU, the rules are a lot more stringent. The key differences when you’re not an EU national nor the spouse or partner of an EU national:

● You need to prove your reasons for traveling to the EU and apply for the relevant visa (when a visa is necessary).

● If you plan on a stay longer than 3 months or if you want to work or study, you need to show your credentials. For example, acceptance by an education institution or sponsorship by an employer.

● This means you need to go through a difficult and costly process of first finding an institution or a job with an employer that is willing to sponsor you. This is easiest for highly qualified workers but, even for them, it is not simple. If you aren’t a highly qualified worker, this becomes almost impossible.

● Unlike what happens when you’re the spouse of an EU citizen, when you only have a work permit or residence, you can’t stay if not working, studying or having another strong and valid reason to stay in the EU.

In short

The spouse of someone with Latvian citizenship doesn’t receive citizenship automatically. However, they have the right to be reunited with their EU spouse and can easily apply to live and work anywhere in the EU. This is a clear advantage over anyone who isn’t the spouse of an EU citizen.

People are increasingly flocking towards stable European states — especially in the face of pandemics and political instability in their home countries. Our advice: if you’re thinking of relocating to Europe with your spouse (or just want a solid backup plan) and can restore your Latvian citizenship, it’s time to do so now. Don’t wait until it’s too late to act and secure the future of your family now.

Get Latvian Citizenship For Your Children— Eligibility and Limits

If you’ve wondered whether you should unearth those documents and finally restore Latvian citizenship, now’s the time to say yes.

If you want to be part of a nation that ranks high in human development, growth, and liberties— which is also a member of the EU—, you should get the process started.

But who’s eligible for restoration by descent? And if you are, what about your children? Do they become Latvian citizens automatically?

Who can restore Latvian citizenship?

Restoration by descent means you trace back your ancestry to someone who was a Latvian citizen, present documents that prove it, and apply to become a citizen ‘by right of blood’. It might be a parent, grandparent, great-grandparent— generations don’t count for Latvian law.

What are the limits for getting Latvian citizenship?

Here’s what does matter: to be eligible for Latvian dual citizenship (keeping your other nationality too), your ancestors need to have left Latvia during the Occupation in the last century.

What’s the Occupation? Though not the most studied fragment of twentieth-century history, Latvia was occupied from World War II until the 90s by either Germany or the Soviet Union. Many Latvians emigrated (left or were exiled) and became citizens of other countries. Their descendants might be eligible for citizenship restoration today.

So while there is no generation limit, there is a temporal one: if your ancestor left Latvia between 1940 and 1990, you are a candidate for Latvian citizenship.

Do your children get Latvian citizenship too?

This is a crucial question if you have a family or dream of starting one. Latvia became a member of the EU in 2004— this brings many benefits but also wildly increasing numbers of citizenship applications. This means an increase in restrictions.

If you have children.

Your children can restore their Latvian citizenship because your ancestors are theirs too. There’s only one catch: they’re eligible if born before 2014.

If you don’t have children yet.

If you go through the process to get citizenship by descent while you’re still childless, you’re in the clear. After restoration, any child you have will automatically get Latvian citizenship because they have a Latvian parent.

However, if you have a child before you restore citizenship, they won’t be able to restore Latvian citizenship, even if you do. The reason— they were born after 2014 to parents who weren’t citizens.

Any person born after 2014 cannot restore Latvian citizenship by descent. So, if you do not have children yet, you should restore your Latvian citizenship as soon as possible, so that your children obtain Latvian citizenship by birth (since they will not be able to restore it anymore).

Benefits of restoring your Latvian citizenship.

All well and good, but why should you go finding and translating documents and filling out applications (though we can help you with all that) to restore citizenship? What are the benefits of rushing to ensure you can pass on Latvian citizenship to your children?

1. EU membership.

Because Latvia is a member of the European Union, restoring citizenship gives you very tangible advantages. You get advanced and accessible healthcare, a secure environment, and can relocate to anywhere within the EU (by yourself or with a spouse). Best way to start a new chapter in life.

2. Education and career advancement.

As a citizen of an EU state, where universities don’t charge astronomical sums, you can get a degree without sinking into a debt trap. And with a dual passport, you have a better chance of scoring your dream job in your home country or Europe.

3. Business opportunities.

Latvia’s is a healthy economy with an average high income and good infrastructure. Its stability and competitive environment can mean success for your startup and business goals.

4. Build roots and open doors for your family.

When you have Latvian citizenship, whether you move to Latvia or not, you become part of an ancient culture with a deep identity. What’s more— you get to pass on this legacy (and all the life-changing opportunities that come with it) to your children and the generations to come.

Summing up

If your child was born before 2014, they might be eligible for Latvian citizenship. If they were born after 2014, they can’t get it, even if you are eligible. If you have no children yet, take action, file the paperwork, and restore your Latvian citizenship now.

If your application is granted, you’ll set up a solid foundation for yourself and your family for generations.

Education Benefits of Latvian Dual Citizenship

Education Benefits of Latvian Dual Citizenship

The European education system is known for its high quality thus one of the benefits that people take into account when deciding to get Latvian dual citizenship is that they or their children can take advantage of the European education system.

Any person who has Latvian citizenship is automatically an EU citizen. As an EU citizen, you would have the possibility to attend any EU university under the same conditions as other EU nationals. Latvian citizenship allows benefiting from a world-class education system of EU and EFTA countries. Each country has its own higher education system – but all of them are part of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA).

The EHEA system helps ensure that higher education systems across Europe are compatible and that students, researchers and academics in Europe can collaborate, study or work in other EU countries easily.

Latvian citizens can benefit from significantly lower tuition fees

When it comes to fees, a wide range of options is open to you: from programs that cost tens of thousands of Euros at one end of the scale, to free-of-charge degree programs at the other (with many options in between). This variation in cost in many cases is not based on quality differences – each country of the European Union has its own approach to setting fees for its students. And the fees and conditions that an EU country sets for its own students are automatically applied to any other EU student that wants to study there. So you should look around Europe to see which option suits you best since you will definitely find something suitable for you or your children.

The average tuition fee for an international master’s program in Europe is around 5.100 EUR for students from within the EEA, for international bachelor program, the fees for EU students is 4.500 EUR and twice as high for non-EU students.

Overview of education costs in selected EU countries

EU citizens have access to student loans and a number of grants and scholarships. For example, tuition fee for medical studies in the US is $20-40,000 per year, but medical studies are free in Scotland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and many other countries in Europe. If you study medicine in Europe (to become a doctor in 7 years) you can save $140,000-280,000 compared to the study costs in the USA. Costs for other types of studies would be smaller, but you would still save a substantial amount as widen your cultural horizons by living in another country and continent.

In England, EU students pay a tuition fee ranging from 7,560 EUR to 12,600 EUR per year, depending on the area of studies, degree and university. In comparison tuition fees for non-EU students can reach 27,700 EUR per year. While it is still uncertain how Brexit will affect EU students in Britain, it is likely that they will continue to enjoy preferential treatment, since many British students study in the EU, as well.

If you have or consider obtaining Latvian citizenship you can also study for free in several EU countries. One of the countries that offer tuition-free education for EU citizens is Austria. Austrian universities do not charge tuition fees for students from EU-EEA member countries and Switzerland. Students from non-EU countries pay a study fee of average 726 EUR (per semester). Of course, many lectures are in German, however, you should do your research, since increasingly many degrees are being taught partially or exclusively in English.

University education in Denmark is also free for students from the EU countries and Switzerland. For students from other countries, tuition fees range from about EUR 6,000 to EUR 16,000 Euro per year. And tuition fees may reach over 35,000 EUR/year for non-EU students for some highly specialized degrees.

In the Netherlands, tuition fees for EU students at any degree level can reach up to 2,000 EUR per year. The average tuition fees for non-EU students studying in this country are multiple times more expensive – between 6,000 – 12,000 EUR per year for a bachelor’s degree, and 8,000 – 20,000 EUR per year for master’s degree.

Widen your horizons by studying in Europe

Widen your horizons – come to Europe to get a degree from a selected university in any European country. Not only will you get a quality education and will live in a new country, but most likely you will save on the tuition fees as well, if you have dual Latvian citizenship. Getting a Latvian Dual Passport – The Process

Getting a Latvian Dual Passport – The Process

If you have Latvian ancestry, it might be possible for you to obtain Latvian dual citizenship and passport. Besides connecting to one’s heritage, Latvian passport holders can also benefit in multiple practical ways from their new citizenship.

Why Should I Get a Latvian Dual Passport?

For sure, having a Latvian passport allows you to live in Latvia, but most people do not know that apart from this, one can also get the following benefits:

Possibility to live and work in Europe without need for residence and work permits,

Right to own property anywhere in the EU,

Visa-free travel to over 150 countries,

Ease of opening a business and bank accounts in the EU,

Possibility to study in the EU for free or for highly reduced rates,

Right to pass on Latvian citizenship to children, grand-children and so on.

To understand better the process of applying for Latvian dual citizenship, we broke it down into separate steps for you:

Determining Your Eligibility

Before you apply for Latvian dual citizenship by descent, you have to satisfy the eligibility criteria set by the Citizenship Law of Latvia. In simple terms you should meet the following criteria to obtain dual citizenship Latvia:

One of your ancestors was a Latvian citizen before 1940,

They fled or were exiled from Latvia during the 1940-1990 period.

In short, if you have at least one Latvian ancestor that was Latvian citizen before WW2 and fled Latvia during or after the WW2, you might be able to restore your dual citizenship Latvia and get Latvian passport.

The Citizenship Law of Latvia sounds deceptively simple, but the actual application process is also regulated by rules of the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs and precedent forming decisions of the courts. So in order to accurately assess the chances of getting the citizenship, it is always better to get an opinion of a lawyer specialized in this area of law.

Finding documents that prove Latvian citizenship of your ancestor

The next step of the citizenship restoration process is finding documents that prove Latvian citizenship of your ancestor. The best document for proof of citizenship is Latvian passport, however, many other documents might be used for the purpose, such as land ownership documents, certain documents about studies, military service documents, etc. One has to keep in mind that not all documents issued in Latvia or abroad would be considered to be a proof of Latvian citizenship, therefore you have to know what to look for.

Collecting additional documents and preparing the applications

After proof of Latvian citizenship of your ancestor is found you can proceed to the next step of the application process; collecting other supporting documents and preparing the application itself. The following documents are some of the documents that you might need to acquire:

Your birth certificate,

Your and your parents’ marriage certificate if surnames were changed,

Immigration and naturalization documents,

Copy of your current passport.

You will also have to fill out the application forms and, possibly, additional explanation documents to speed up the application process. You will also need to certify all the documents, by a notary public and/or apostille.

The exact package of documents needed and how they have to be certified differs depending on the specific situation of the applicant, the country, and types of the documents. Devil is in the detail and any error will significantly delay the processing time of the application.

Translation and submitting

After all the documents are collected and certified, they have to be translated to Latvian and submitted for the application processing to the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs.

The application processing time at the moment takes about 4-6 months (from the moment the application is submitted to the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs). After the decision to grant Latvian dual citizenship is made, the applicant can get Latvian passport in the closest Latvian embassy or consulate. The day you will get Latvian passport might change your and your children’s life since you will be not only Latvian but also an EU citizen, with many more opportunities because of that.

We at De Civitate offer Latvian dual citizenship by descent assistance to people with Latvian ancestry. Our clients do not have to be in Latvia during the application process. We will handle the application process until Latvian passport is granted to you and will help with the document search, translation, application submission, and making follow-ups with the Latvian authorities until citizenship is granted.
